Halkidiki Fires satellite Image

Satellite picture taken on August 22, 2006 when the devastating fires raged in Halkidiki in northern Greece, and
in Lakonia in southern Peloponnese.

In this photo, the red dots represent the fire locations, and
the smoke emanated is visible over the Aegean sea. The rugged terrain made the fire-fighting efforts extremely
difficult, and many residents and tourists evacuated the area
as the fire consumed homes and hotels in Halkidiki.
