The beautifully rendered statue of Andreas Miaoulis in front of Syros City hall pays homage to the great admiral and politician who commanded Greek naval forces in the Greek Ware of Independence. One of his major contributions was the relief he provied to the town of Messolongi when the Ottomans sieged and eventually starved the population into submission.

Ermoupolis at night has a special charm as the lights illuminate the beautiful stores and charming buildings.

Ermoupolis is built on a couple steep hills so once you move away from the promenade you begin climbing a beautiful part of the town behind Miaouli square and towards Anastasi.

Picture of Syros island interior landscape. Going North towards Kampos. My intent was to drive near the prehistoric settlement of Kastri, but as I got closer the road got worst and when I told a couple of locals that I was planning to hike to the ancient ruins, they looked at me as if I were from outer space. I abandoned the quest and returned to civilization.

Galissas is drab town with absolutely zero personallity, but it's beach is a long, sandy oasis worth visiting or staying at you enhoy quiet.
syros-41

Another View of Galissas Beach. Galissas is known by just about every Greek as it is mentioned by the famous Rebetiko singer/composer, Markos Vamvakaris. (here is a list with Vamvakaris songs for those who don't know anything about him and for those who's head is stuck with "Γαλισσα και Δελαγρατσια και ας μοθ?ρθει συγγοπη..."

I wondered if all the toursits staying at Galissa knew who Markos Vamvakaris was.
